PLANE MATH TAKES OFF
PlaneMath is a web site designed to inspire students with disabilities to persevere with mathematics and consider aviation a career goal. Nine current activities include routing the shortest trip across country, flying a herd of buffalo back to the Great Plains, determining the shortest runway needed to land a 747 and a helicopter simulation. The interactive math curriculum at a fourth grade level is being developed under a cooperative agreement between NASA and InfoUse. More activities will be added in the coming months for fourth and fifth graders. Teachers can sign up to receive support, win prizes and log on with students. Designed to follow the NCTM standards, PlaneMath is an adjunct to standard classroom curriculum. Related to the activities are role models in aviation who are often people with disabilities who talk about how mathematics is used in their jobs. Classroom activities and information for parents and teachers on the objectives of each lesson are also included. For more information log on at <www.planemath.com>.
