RE: ACT 48 Continuing Professional Staff Development Requirements

The PA Federation Council for Exceptional Children (PFCEC) offers staff development opportunities for special and regular educators and administrators on a continuing basis. These offerings are in the form of conference attendance, presentations at the PFCEC and National conferences and serving as a committee member for various state and national committees related to services for students with special needs. PFCEC is requesting that school districts, Intermediate Units and Approved Private Schools include PFCEC sponsored activities in their ACT 178 Staff Development Plans as an approved means to acquire the newly required 180 hours of continuing education for all educators.

PFCEC is the only organization in PA whose sole mission is to provide support, training and information to Special Educators and those responsible for the implementation of Special Education programs in the Commonwealth. PFCEC requests placement on your approved list of staff development providers as we can provide many opportunities to help meet the ACT 4requirements. Examples of our offerings include:

bulletLegal updates on Special Education Issues
bulletInformation regarding best practices in the field of special education
bulletStrategies/ accommodations for meeting the diverse needs found in today's classrooms
bulletAwareness and training on the latest trends / issues in the research
bulletShowcasing of new materials/ equipment on the market
bulletImplementation of the use of the latest assistive technology
bulletDevelopment of leadership skills
bulletNetworking opportunities for problem solving/ sharing
bulletA forum for questions and answers
bulletParticipation on committees to help guide state and national issues/ requirements

As you can see, PFCEC can help meet your staff's continuing education needs. We request that you please include PFCEC as an approved provider for the hours needed to meet the new state requirements. Also, please note that our next scheduled conference will be held on November 2 and 3, 2000 at the Harrisburg/ Hershey Holiday Inn at Grantville. Check out our website for more information.
